Repeated Shoulder Dislocation: What Are Your Treatment Options?

Why a shoulder can keep slipping out, how it is assessed, and how rehabilitation and surgical options are considered.

Why does it keep happening?

A dislocation can injure the tissues that hold the shoulder in its socket. Some people also have naturally loose ligaments. Recurrent slipping, giving way or dislocation deserves assessment.

What does assessment involve?

Your surgeon reviews the episodes and examines stability. X-rays assess bone; MRI may clarify soft-tissue injury. CT may be needed to evaluate bone loss.

Physiotherapy or surgery?

Activity changes and physiotherapy can improve muscle control and stability. Repeated dislocations may need surgical repair; bone loss can change the operation required. A keyhole repair is not the answer for every unstable shoulder.

Recovery needs a plan

Rehabilitation progresses after treatment to restore movement and strength. Follow the instructions specific to your procedure.
