Night-time shoulder pain alone cannot establish a rotator cuff tear. The rotator cuff helps lift and rotate your arm. Some tears cause little or no pain, so symptoms and examination need to be considered together.
Your clinician examines the shoulder first. Ultrasound or MRI may help identify a suspected tear alongside the clinical findings.
No. Treatment depends on whether the tear followed an injury, its size, your symptoms, activity needs and general health. Physiotherapy can improve symptoms; some patients are better suited to surgery. Discuss the options for your own shoulder.
Tell us when the pain began, whether there was an injury and which activities are difficult. Bring previous reports and your medication list.
