Iliotibial (IT) band syndrome causes pain on the outer aspect of the knee, most commonly in runners and cyclists.
The IT band is a thick strip of connective tissue that runs from the hip to the outer knee. IT band syndrome results from friction between the IT band and the outer part of the knee during repeated bending and straightening.
If symptoms persist despite initial rest and simple measures, are severe, or are affecting daily activities, an assessment can help clarify diagnosis and treatment options. Bring any previous imaging or notes to your consultation.
Treatment focuses on training modification, foam rolling, structured hip and gluteal strengthening, and correcting biomechanical factors. Injections may be considered in resistant cases. Surgery is rarely required.
Contact us if you experience severe pain, sudden loss of function, fever, unexplained weight loss, or any concerning new symptom. Not every condition requires surgery — treatment is decided together after clinical examination and imaging review.
Bring any recent X-rays, MRI reports or medical reports. We’ll examine you, review your imaging and recommend an appropriate treatment path.
