Who we treat

The Bangalore weekend warrior

Something has changed in Bangalore over the last five years. The average age of my ACL patients dropped from 42 to 34. Rotator cuff injuries are showing a similar pattern. My OPD is full of software engineers, product managers, and business owners between 28 and 48 who have started taking their fitness seriously — and pushed their bodies past what they were prepared for.

You may recognise yourself here:

None of these injuries need to end your sport. Handled correctly and early, most patients return to full activity within 3 to 6 months. Handled late, they turn into arthritis in your 50s.

Why speed of diagnosis matters

Most sports injuries look similar in the first 48 hours — pain, swelling, limited movement. The difference between a simple ligament sprain and an ACL tear can only be made on examination and MRI. Waiting weeks to see a doctor delays return to sport, and in some injuries (like a bucket-handle meniscus tear or a dislocated shoulder with Bankart lesion) it worsens the outcome. Our clinic offers same-day MRI and diagnosis for acute injuries.

What we treat

The 8 most common sports injuries we see

1

ACL tear

Twisted your knee playing cricket or football. Felt a pop. Knee swelled up and now feels unstable. Diagnosis: MRI. Treatment: reconstruction using your own hamstring or a graft.

Cricketers · Footballers · Skiers
2

Meniscus tear

Knee catches, clicks, or locks. Sometimes hurts kneeling. Often happens with squats, deep lunges, or twisting. Diagnosis: MRI. Treatment: repair or partial removal (arthroscopic).

Gym-goers · CrossFit · Trekkers
3

Rotator cuff tear

Shoulder hurts lifting arm above head. Weak. Can't sleep on that side. Worsens over weeks. Diagnosis: MRI. Treatment: physiotherapy first, arthroscopic repair if it doesn't respond.

Overhead athletes · CrossFit · Swimmers
4

Shoulder dislocation

Shoulder came out of joint. First-time dislocation in someone under 25 has 70-80% recurrence — often needs arthroscopic Bankart repair to stabilise.

Contact sports · Gym injuries
5

Tennis / golfer's elbow

Pain on outer or inner elbow when gripping. Can start from tennis, weightlifting, or even prolonged mouse use. Diagnosis: clinical. Treatment: physio + activity modification; injection in stubborn cases.

Racquet sports · Weightlifters · Desk workers
6

Runner's knee / IT band

Outer knee pain that starts after 5-10 km of running or cycling. Gets worse downhill. Diagnosis: clinical exam. Treatment: gait analysis, targeted strengthening, occasional injection.

Marathoners · Cyclists · Trekkers
7

Achilles tendon injury

Back-of-heel pain, stiffness in the morning. Sometimes a sudden "kick from behind" sensation during sprint = rupture. Diagnosis: clinical + ultrasound. Treatment: often non-surgical unless full tear.

Runners · Basketball · Badminton
8

Ankle sprain / instability

You keep rolling the same ankle. Loose feeling on uneven ground. Diagnosis: clinical + stress X-rays. Treatment: ankle stability programme; ligament reconstruction if recurrent.

Trekkers · Basketball · Football
9

Stress fractures

Bone pain that started gradually and got worse with more running or high-mileage training. Point tenderness on the bone. Diagnosis: MRI or bone scan. Treatment: rest + return-to-run programme.

Endurance runners · Marathon trainees
How we approach it

Our sports-first treatment philosophy

Sports patients are different from arthritis patients. You have a specific sport you want to return to, a season you want to prepare for, and a timeline that matters. Every treatment decision here is made around that.

Step 1 — Same day diagnosis

Consultation + on-site X-ray + MRI referral within 24 hours. No 2-week wait to know what's wrong.

Step 2 — Non-surgical first (when appropriate)

The majority of sports injuries do NOT need surgery. Partial ligament tears, most meniscus tears, most rotator cuff tears in patients over 45, most runner's knee — all treatable without an OT.

Step 3 — Clear surgical criteria

Surgery is recommended only if: (a) MRI shows a complete tear that will not heal, (b) the joint is unstable or locking, (c) 6-8 weeks of conservative treatment has failed. Every case is discussed with you before booking OT.

Step 4 — Sport-specific rehabilitation

Return-to-sport protocols customised to your sport. Cricket bowler doesn't rehab like a swimmer. Runner's knee-strengthening is different from a footballer's ACL recovery.

Step 5 — Return-to-sport clearance

Structured tests before you go back — single-leg hop test, functional strength testing, sport-specific movement clearance. You return only when you're ready, not on a random calendar date.

Typical return-to-sport timelines

Injured last weekend?

Don’t wait it out. Early diagnosis often means less invasive treatment and a faster return to sport. Same-day MRI available for acute injuries.

FAQs

Common questions from sports patients

Do I need an MRI for every sports injury?
No. Minor sprains, contusions, and most first-time tennis/golfer's elbow don't need MRI. But if you had a specific injury moment (a pop, a twist), the joint is unstable, or the pain is not improving after 5-7 days of rest, MRI is the right next step. We decide together after clinical examination.
Will I be able to play the same sport at the same level after surgery?
In most cases, yes — especially for ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair, and rotator cuff repair. But return depends on your age, pre-injury fitness, adherence to physiotherapy, and the specific sport. Return-to-cricket after ACL is different from return-to-marathon. We set realistic expectations based on your specific case.
What's the cost of ACL reconstruction in Bangalore?
Approximately ₹1.4 to 2.2 lakh at Manipal Kanakapura Road. Fully covered by most insurers — Star Health, HDFC ERGO, Bajaj Allianz, Care Health, corporate GPA. Cashless approval typically comes through within 24-48 hours.
How long am I off work after ACL surgery?
Desk-based work: 2-3 weeks. Jobs involving standing or walking: 4-6 weeks. Physical labour or field work: 3-4 months. Modified work-from-home arrangements can start as early as 5-7 days post-op.
Can I get an MRI on the same day as consultation?
Yes, for acute injuries within our OPD hours. Manipal Kanakapura Road has on-site MRI. For non-urgent cases, we schedule for the next working day.
I'm 55 with a rotator cuff tear — do I need surgery?
Not necessarily. Most rotator cuff tears in patients over 55 respond well to a structured physiotherapy programme (6-12 weeks) especially if the tear is small or partial. Surgery is considered when: physiotherapy has failed, the tear is large/complete, night pain is severe, or you have specific overhead activity goals. Every case is discussed individually.
