Why Banashankari residents need a nearby orthopedic specialist

Banashankari is one of the oldest and most densely populated residential zones in South Bangalore, with a high concentration of senior citizens and an active middle-class community. Knee and joint problems are common here — but access to a senior orthopedic surgeon who is close enough to see for regular follow-ups is often not easy.

Dr. Vijay Chandar performs joint replacement and complex orthopedic surgeries at Manipal Hospitals Kanakapura Road — a NABH-accredited multi-specialty facility with modern operation theatres, in-house physiotherapy, and 24-hour intensivist cover.

Conditions we treat

Common knee problems we treat for Banashankari patients

Knee osteoarthritis in older adults

The most common cause of knee replacement in South Indian patients. Cartilage in the knee joint wears down progressively over years, causing pain, stiffness, and difficulty with daily activities like climbing stairs, sitting cross-legged, or walking to the temple. Genetics, weight, and prior injuries all play a role. Not every case needs surgery — but when non-surgical treatments have failed and quality of life is affected, knee replacement offers dramatic, lasting relief.

Post-injury arthritis

Patients who suffered a knee injury decades ago — often during college sports or military service — sometimes develop arthritis in that knee much earlier than their other knee. This is called post-traumatic arthritis and often needs partial or total knee replacement in the 50s or early 60s.

Meniscus tears and cartilage injuries

Common in patients aged 40 to 60 who are active gym-goers, weekend cricketers, or trekkers. Not all meniscus tears need surgery — many respond to physiotherapy alone. When surgery is needed, it is usually done arthroscopically as a day-care procedure.

Ligament injuries (ACL, MCL, PCL)

ACL tears are common in weekend footballers, cricketers, and gym trainers. We offer both non-surgical and surgical management depending on your age, activity level, and how the knee is behaving in daily life.

Your treatment journey

What to expect through your treatment

Initial consultation

Bring your recent X-rays, MRI reports, and a list of current medications. Dr. Vijay will examine you, review your imaging, and give a clear recommendation — surgical or non-surgical. There is no pressure to decide on the same day.

Pre-operative workup

If surgery is agreed, we schedule 2 to 3 visits over 2 to 4 weeks for blood tests, cardiac evaluation, anaesthesia clearance, and a physiotherapy briefing.

Surgery and hospital stay

Admission at Manipal Hospitals Kanakapura Road on the morning of surgery. The procedure itself takes 60 to 90 minutes per knee. Most patients stay 3 to 5 nights and are discharged only when independent with a walker.

Recovery at home

Home physiotherapy 3 to 4 times weekly for the first 6 weeks. Follow-up visits at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year. Most patients walk without a walker by 3 weeks and drive again by 6 weeks.

Have questions? Come for a consultation.

Most patients who consult us leave with a non-surgical plan. If surgery is recommended, we explain everything — cost, risks, timeline, recovery — before you decide.
