A patient's guide to surgery day and recovery. What the rooms look like, what the food is like, when family can visit, how insurance works, and what discharge looks like — from Dr. Vijay Chandar and the team.
Manipal Hospitals Kanakapura Road is a NABH-accredited multi-specialty hospital that opened to serve the growing population of South Bangalore. It brings the same clinical protocols, technology, and specialist access as the flagship Manipal Old Airport Road facility — but 20 to 30 minutes from your home if you live anywhere from Vajarahalli to Banashankari, instead of the 60-90 minute drive to central Bangalore.
Dr. Vijay Chandar is a consultant orthopedic surgeon here, using the hospital's operation theatres, radiology, ICU, and physiotherapy facilities for all surgeries. OPD consultations happen at VBJ Bone & Joint Clinic on Kanakapura Main Road, a short distance from the hospital.
Anyone can rent an operation theatre for an afternoon. What you cannot rent is a full multi-specialty hospital with ICU backup, on-call cardiology, in-house radiology, a blood bank, 24-hour lab, and dedicated infection-control protocols. For an elective knee replacement or ACL surgery, the surgery itself is only 1-2 hours. The other 5 days of your hospital stay depend entirely on the surrounding infrastructure. Manipal Kanakapura Road gives you that infrastructure without the central-Bangalore commute.
Your room category affects both your experience and your total bill. Insurance usually covers up to a specific room type per your policy — anything higher, you pay the difference. Here are the general options:
| Category | What you get | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|
| General ward | Shared room (3-6 beds), shared bathroom, curtain partition | Budget or basic insurance policies |
| Twin sharing | 2 beds per room, shared bathroom, TV, one attendant chair per bed | Most standard insurance policies |
| Single (private) | Private room, attached bathroom, TV, one attendant sofa, mini-fridge | Most premium insurance / corporate GPA |
| Deluxe | Larger single room, larger attendant sofa, upgraded amenities, better view | Higher-end insurance / paying out of pocket |
| Suite | Separate living area for family, upgraded bathroom, premium bedding | Out-of-pocket, VIPs, extended stays |
Room category has NO impact on medical care. Your surgeon, anaesthetist, nurses, physiotherapists, and medication protocols are identical regardless of which room you are in. The difference is comfort — how many people share the space, private bathroom vs shared, and how comfortable your family can stay overnight.
Nothing to eat or drink after this. Nurses will remind you at pre-admission.
You and one attendant arrive at Manipal reception. Room is allocated, hospital gown given, pre-op checks by nurses (BP, sugar, temperature).
The anaesthetist meets you in your room, reviews your reports one final time, answers any last questions, and explains what to expect.
You are moved to the operation theatre area. IV line and monitoring are set up. Family stays in the waiting area with regular updates from OT nurses.
60-90 minutes per knee. The surgeon calls the family immediately after the surgery is complete to update them on how it went.
You are in the post-op recovery unit for 1-2 hours until fully awake and stable. Family can see you briefly here.
You return to your hospital room. Pain relief is provided intravenously. You may sleep on-and-off for the next few hours.
Once you are alert and comfortable, you can have small sips of water, then soup, then light food. Full meals typically resume the next morning.
Physiotherapist visits. You are helped to stand and take your first few steps (for knee replacement patients). This is normal and safe with modern surgical techniques.
Manipal Kanakapura Road allows one attendant round-the-clock in private rooms. In shared rooms, one attendant is typically allowed but must vacate during doctor rounds and cleaning.
Additional family and friends can visit during standard visiting hours (usually 4-7 PM), with a maximum of 2 visitors at a time per room to avoid disturbance to other patients.
Manipal Kanakapura Road is empanelled with essentially every major health insurance provider in India. The process is:
Once we decide on surgery, our clinic sends your case details to the insurance TPA. They approve or query within 24-72 hours. You cannot be admitted for elective surgery without pre-authorisation.
You bring your insurance card and the pre-authorisation approval letter to admission. The billing department confirms details and admits you with a nominal advance (₹5,000 to ₹25,000 depending on the policy).
All medically necessary charges are billed directly to insurance. You are informed if anything requires additional approval.
Final bill is submitted to insurance for approval. You pay only for items your policy does not cover — typically food for the attendant, room-category upgrades, non-medical extras.
Star Health, HDFC ERGO, Bajaj Allianz, Care Health, Aditya Birla, Niva Bupa, ICICI Lombard, TATA AIG, New India Assurance, Oriental Insurance, National Insurance, United India Insurance, Reliance General, MediBuddy, Manipal Cigna, ManipalCigna ProHealth, and most corporate GPA plans.
If your insurer is not on this list, we can still process a reimbursement claim after discharge — you pay upfront and the insurer refunds you.
You are discharged only when specific criteria are met — not on a calendar date. For knee replacement, discharge typically happens on day 3 or 4 when:
A home physiotherapist visits 3-4 times per week. You will need one attendant to help with meals, bathroom trips, and medication for the first 2-3 weeks. Most patients are largely independent by week 3. Walker is usually discarded around week 3-4.
