Orthopaedic physiotherapy addresses conditions affecting bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons. It is the branch of physiotherapy that most people are actually looking for when a knee, shoulder, hip, back or ankle stops behaving. What separates it from general physiotherapy is the clinical thinking behind the plan — every programme begins with a working diagnosis of what is happening in the tissues, and a rehabilitation plan built for that specific problem.
At VBJ, orthopaedic physiotherapy sits within a wider orthopaedic ecosystem. Where a case needs an orthopaedic opinion or imaging review, coordination is close. Where it doesn't, physiotherapy stands on its own.
Two things typically differ:
Knee — osteoarthritis, patellofemoral pain, meniscus injury, ACL injury (post-surgical and non-operative pathways), runner's knee, jumper's knee, IT band syndrome, chronic knee stiffness after past injury.
Shoulder — rotator cuff pain and tears, frozen shoulder, shoulder instability, impingement, post-surgical shoulder recovery.
Hip — osteoarthritis, gluteal tendinopathy, post-replacement, femoroacetabular impingement rehabilitation.
Back and neck — non-specific back pain, sciatica, disc-related pain (non-surgical pathway), postural back pain, chronic neck pain.
Foot and ankle — ankle sprains, chronic ankle instability, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, post-fracture ankle.
Fractures and trauma — post-cast or post-fixation upper- and lower-limb rehabilitation.
If your case isn't listed, WhatsApp us — we can tell you whether we're the right service before you book.
The first appointment focuses on understanding the problem in enough depth to plan real treatment. It usually covers:
Exercise-based rehabilitation is the core. Progressive strengthening, mobility, motor control and functional retraining, adjusted every session to what your body is ready for.
Manual therapy where appropriate. Soft-tissue techniques, joint mobilisation and myofascial release — used as part of a plan, not in isolation.
Modalities used selectively. Electrotherapy and similar adjuncts are used where they genuinely add value, never as the whole treatment.
Home programme design. A clear written programme you can do between sessions and after discharge. Consistency here is usually the biggest factor in outcome.
Ergonomics and activity advice. How you sit, drive, sleep and lift often shapes outcomes as much as the exercise programme itself.
If your case needs an orthopaedic opinion — whether that's to review a scan, discuss whether surgery is appropriate, or coordinate a shared plan — that pathway is available through the same premises. Referral to the orthopaedic team is offered where it is clinically useful, not by default.
Equally, if you have already had surgery — here or elsewhere — and just need structured rehabilitation, that is a service we deliver on its own. Bring your operative report and any post-operative instructions.
Movement — the right movement, at the right dose, at the right time — is what protects joints, restores function and returns confidence. That is the principle behind every orthopaedic physiotherapy plan at VBJ.
No. You can book directly. If the physiotherapist believes your case needs medical investigation before treatment is safe, you will be told and helped to arrange it.
Most soft-tissue and pain-related conditions respond over a series of appointments. The specific number is agreed after your assessment and depends on the diagnosis, the phase of healing, and your response to treatment.
Yes. Bring any imaging or reports you have — the physiotherapist will review them alongside the clinical examination. Imaging supports the plan; it does not replace examination.
Where a case appears to need surgical review, the physiotherapist explains why and helps arrange an orthopaedic consultation. Physiotherapy does not delay appropriate surgical care.
In many cases, yes. Structured strengthening, load management and activity advice can meaningfully change how a joint with arthritis feels and functions. It does not reverse the arthritis, but it often changes what you can do with it.
